Mihintale

Mihintale is one of the most important religious and historical sites in Sri Lanka. Often regarded as the birthplace of Buddhism in the country, Mihintale holds immense spiritual significance for Buddhists and history enthusiasts alike. The site is located just a few kilometers from the ancient city of Anuradhapura, making it a popular destination for pilgrims and travelers exploring Sri Lanka’s cultural heritage.

According to historical records, Mihintale is the place where Mahinda Thera, the son of Indian Emperor Ashoka, first met King Devanampiya Tissa in the 3rd century BCE. This meeting led to the introduction of Buddhism to Sri Lanka, marking a turning point in the island’s cultural and religious history.

Visitors reaching the summit of Mihintale climb a long series of ancient stone steps surrounded by lush greenery and peaceful surroundings. Along the way, you will encounter several historic structures, including the impressive Mihintale Stupa, meditation caves, and ruins of monastic buildings that date back more than two thousand years.
